Version 2: mother consents to travel with the father

Some airlines and offices call this an NOC letter for a child travelling with one parent. The wording above works under either name. If the office gives you its own form, use theirs.

Separated and divorced parents

When parents live apart, the consent letter is the same, but the paperwork around it matters more.

Shared custody

The parent who is not travelling signs the letter as above. Keep a copy of the custody arrangement with the travel documents.

Sole custody by court order

Bring the order to the drafting stage. The letter can refer to it, and the travelling parent should carry a copy.

The other parent will not sign

A notary cannot seal a consent the other parent has not given. This is a legal question, not a paperwork one, and it needs a family lawyer.

The other parent is abroad

They can sign a consent letter before a notary or an accredited UAE consul where they live, and send the original. It may then need attestation for use in the UAE.

The staying parent signs before a notary, at home, at work or at the notary's office. The notary checks the original Emirates ID or passport, reads out the letter and confirms the parent agrees (Federal Decree-Law No. 20 of 2022, Article 7).

The travelling parent carries the original with the children's passports, and a photo of it on their phone.

A notarized consent letter from the non-traveling parent is what check-in staff and border officers can rely on, because the seal records that the notary saw the parent sign.

Does the travelling parent need a letter too?

No. The letter comes from the parent who is not on the trip. The travelling parent carries it.

Can one letter cover several children?

Yes. List each child with their passport number. Our father to mother version shows how.

Can the consent cover more than one trip?

A consent letter is normally written for one trip with fixed dates. For repeated travel, a broader document may fit better. See the difference on our main child travel consent letter page.

Do airlines always ask for this letter?

Not always, but they can, and so can border officers at the destination. Carrying a notarised letter avoids the risk.

What if the child also needs a visa NOC?
