Declaration of Residency UAE: A Sample for When Nothing Is in Your Name

A bank, school or embassy asks for address proof in UAE form, and the tenancy contract and bills are all in someone else's name. This declaration of residency UAE sample is the usual answer: a signed statement of where you live, confirmed before a notary, often with a supporting statement from the person on the lease.

Three ways to get it notarised

In person with our in-house notary public

Come to us with your originals. The notary public checks each declarant's ID, reads the declaration, confirms each person understands and agrees, watches you sign and applies the seal.

Home or hospital visit

Online notary public

Proof of residence UAE: who needs a declaration

Offices that ask include banks, schools, embassies, licensing offices and insurers. A declaration fills the gap when the usual documents are in another name. It suits:

  • Spouses and dependants, when the tenancy and DEWA account are in one spouse's name.
  • People sharing a flat, who often have no document from the landlord.
  • New arrivals staying with family or in temporary housing.
  • Families of property owners who live in the property but are not on the title deed.

Some banks accept a notarised declaration together with the householder's documents. The authority or bank decides, so ask first.

Most declarations have two parts: your own statement, and a supporting statement from the tenant or owner. Use both if the receiving office wants a link to the lease. If it wants a sworn statement, the wording changes to "state on oath" and the declaration is signed as an affidavit. Our declaration letter templates include that version.

Each declarant shows the original ID. The notary reads out the declaration, confirms each person understands and agrees, and seals it (Federal Decree-Law No. 20 of 2022, Article 7).

Hand it over

You receive the sealed declaration and give it to the bank, school or embassy with copies of the supporting documents.

Other ways to get address proof in UAE

A declaration is one kind of proof of address, not the only one. Check whether one of these works for your office first:

  • Be added to the tenancy or Ejari as an occupant, if your landlord agrees.
  • Open a utility or telecom account in your own name at the address.
  • A certified copy of a bill in the householder's name, with a relationship document.
  • A letter from your employer confirming your address, where the office accepts it.

Mistakes to avoid

Mistakes that get it refused

  • An address that does not match the lease Copy the flat number and building name exactly.
  • No start date "I live here" is weaker than "since March 2024".
  • A vague purpose Name the bank or school.
  • One signature where two are needed If the office wants the householder to confirm, both sign before the notary.
  • Expecting it to work everywhere Some offices accept a declaration and some do not. Ask first.

Frequently asked questions

What does a declaration of residency actually prove?

It is a statement, signed before a notary, confirming where you live. It is used as address proof in the UAE when there is no bill or lease in your name.

Is a declaration of residency the same as a residence visa?

No. Your residence visa and Emirates ID show you may live in the UAE. A declaration of residency shows the address where you live.

Will a bank accept a declaration I signed months ago?

It depends on the bank. Each office decides how recent it must be, so sign close to the date you need it.

Can I get notarised proof of address without the landlord?

Yes, you can sign your own declaration alone. Some offices still want a link to the lease, which is why a supporting declaration from the tenant or owner is often added.

Where can I get proof of address if I just arrived?

If you are staying with family, a declaration from you and the host is the usual route. In a hotel or serviced flat, ask the property for a letter first.

Is this the same as a proof of residency document for another country?

Some foreign governments ask citizens abroad for proof of residency. A UAE declaration can serve, but it may then need MOFAIC attestation and embassy attestation. The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention.
