Power of Attorney for Court Case: Authorise a Lawyer in Dubai Courts
A power of attorney for court case matters lets a lawyer act for you in a dispute. You sign it before a notary public, and the lawyer shows it to the court. This is the document you need when you cannot attend or do not want to.

Three ways to get it notarised
In person with our in-house notary public
The notary public checks your original ID, reads the document, watches you sign and applies the seal. We prepare the English text and the Arabic version first.
Home or hospital visit
We come to your home, hospital or office. Price on request, plus the Dubai private notary government fee of AED 1,000 per trip outside the place of work.
Online
UAE law lets a notary use IT tools in place of personal appearance (Federal Decree-Law No. 20 of 2022, Article 18). Dubai Courts has described its own power of attorney service as checking the parties by virtual or personal attendance. See our e-notary guide.
Who can act for you in court
Representation in court is reserved to lawyers licensed in the UAE and listed on the Ministry of Justice roll (Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2022, Article 6). So a court power of attorney should name a licensed lawyer.
The same law lets a spouse, in-law or blood relative up to the fourth degree appear (Article 8). If you plan to name a relative, ask the court or your lawyer first.
What the power of attorney should name
Pleading before a court is an act that needs a special agency under UAE civil law (Federal Decree-Law No. 25 of 2025, Article 870). A broad general power covers management only (Article 871). So write the court powers in clearly.
- The case: the court, the opponent and the type of dispute, or the type of cases you cover.
- The powers: file claims, attend hearings, receive documents, appoint experts, sign for you.
- The sensitive acts: settlement, acknowledgment and arbitration. Include them only if you want them, and name each one.
- Substitution: whether your lawyer may pass the work to another lawyer. Leave it out unless you want it.
- The end: a date, or the end of the case.

Mistakes to avoid
Mistakes that get it refused
- Naming someone who is not a licensed lawyer, unless they are a spouse or close relative the court accepts (Article 8).
- Wrong spelling of a name. Match the passport.
- Powers not written. Anything missing may be refused.
- No end date. The law sets no fixed term. The document's own term applies (Article 897).

Do I need a power of attorney to hire a lawyer?
A power of attorney is the written way to give a lawyer authority to act for you. Your lawyer will tell you the wording they need.
Can I use a general power of attorney for court cases?
A general power drafted in broad words is limited to management acts. Pleading needs a special agency that names the act. Write the court powers in.
Can my brother or wife appear for me in court?
The law lets a spouse, in-law or blood relative up to the fourth degree appear (Article 8). Ask the court which papers it wants from them.
Can I sign it online?
