Signing help # Witnessing of Signatures in the UAE, at Home or at Work Witnessing of signatures in the UAE means a notary public watches you sign, checks who you are and adds a certificate and seal saying so. Banks, schools, pension funds and foreign offices ask for it when a form says "to be signed in the presence of a notary". The notary public checks each signer's original ID, reads the form, watches you sign and applies the seal. Home, hospital or office visit We come to your home, hospital or office. This suits two people who must sign the same form, or a signer who cannot travel. The visit price is on request, plus the government fee for the trip. Online Some forms can be witnessed remotely through the official UAE channels, the Ministry of Justice E-Notary System or Dubai Courts remote attendance. It depends on your form and the notary. See [e-notary in Dubai](https://privatenotarydubai.com/e-notary-dubai/). ## Signs that your form needs a witnessed signature Look for these words on the form or in the covering letter: * "Signed before a notary public" or "in the presence of a notary". * "Notarised signature" or "certified signature". * A box headed "For notary use only", "Notarial certificate" or "Jurat". * An instruction from a foreign authority to have the signature "legalised" after it is witnessed. If none of these appear, check with the receiving office first. Many letters only need your ordinary signature. ## Endorsement of signature notarization, in plain words Some foreign forms call the notary's step an "endorsement". The notary writes or stamps a short statement under your signature: who appeared, what ID they showed and the date. That statement, the notary's signature and the seal are what people mean by endorsement of signature notarization. The notary confirms the signature, not the content. The person named signed, freely, after showing an official ID ([Federal Decree-Law No. 20 of 2022, Article 7](https://uaelegislation.gov.ae/en/legislations/1563)). The notary does not confirm that the facts in the form are true. Step by step ## Prepare the form before the notary arrives 1 Fill in everything except the signature. Leave the date blank if it sits next to the signature. 2 Do not sign in advance. A signature already on the page cannot be witnessed, and you would need a fresh copy. 3 Use your name exactly as in your ID. 4 Keep the pages in order and unstapled. The notary may initial each page. 5 Check the language. A form only in English, French or Hindi is normally paired with an Arabic translation before a Dubai notary acts on it ([Dubai Law No. 4 of 2013, Article 27](https://dlp.dubai.gov.ae/Legislation%20Reference/2013/Law%20No.%20(4%29%20of%202013%20Concerning%20Notaries%20Public%20in%20the%20Emirate%20of%20Dubai.html)). It usually looks like this: Leave the whole block empty. Do not type the date or the ID in advance, and do not ask a friend to sign as witness there. The notary decides whether to complete the printed block or attach their own certificate. If the form is going abroad, it may need MOFAIC attestation next, and sometimes the embassy of the destination country. The UAE is not a party to the [Hague Apostille Convention](https://www.hcch.net/en/instruments/conventions/status-table/?cid=41), so attestation is the route. We take care of the MOFAIC attestation. Questions ## Frequently asked questions ### Can I sign at home and just bring the form to the notary? No. The notary must see the signature made. Keep an unsigned copy for the appointment. ### Does the notary read my whole form? The notary reads enough to explain what you are signing. The notary does not check the figures on your form. ### Is a witnessed signature the same as a notarised document? Not quite. Witnessing confirms the signature only. A full notarial deed, such as an affidavit or a power of attorney, has the notary record the whole instrument. ### Will a foreign country accept a signature witnessed in the UAE? Usually, once the chain of attestation is complete. Ask the receiving office which stamps it needs after the notary.
